About the director: Deliece Blanchard has been a music educator with the Lynchburg City Schools for 16 years. She has both a BA and an MA from the University of Virginia, completing her studies in music, with an emphasis on cello performance. She has studied cello with Bruce Habitzruther, conductor of the Lynchburg Symphony Orchestra and with Mathias Wexler, professor of cello at the Crane School of Music, SUNY, Potsdam, and former member of the Monticello Trio. She is currently a cellist with the LSO, and performs often in the community.
Delice's groups have consistently performed well in competitions. For the past three years at the VBODA District Festival her students have received straight “superior” scores. In 2003, 2004, and 2005 her orchestra received first place, “superior” ratings in Atlanta, Williamsburg, and Washington, D.C. music festivals. Her students have also traveled to see the Virginia Symphony, Joshua Bell, Itzhak Perlman, and Yo Yo Ma in concert. Mrs. Blanchard has been published in the professional journal “Teaching Music.” Her article in the December 1998 issue, entitled “Middle School String Ensembles – Steps to Independence” explored the benefits of chamber music for young musicians. She has also continued her education at Suzuki Institutes in both Virginia and Montana, and has studied string pedagogy with Dr. Robert Gillespie, past president of the American String Teachers Association, at the Ohio State University. |
